The world is slowly tilting away from seeing fathers solely as “the head of the family”, “the providers”, or those cold and distant authoritarian disciplinarians to, well… seeing them as fathers, with all the guts and glory that it entails.
What does that mean? Well, it means accepting fathers as full partners in this whole child rearing thing. Fathers don’t “babysit” the odd time when mommy needs to go out, they parent, with mommy, 100% of the time. It means accepting all the nappy changes (the wet and the stinky ones), sleepless nights, endless feeds, endless bottles, endless tantrums, endless unexpected pieces of lego turning up in the weirdest of places.
But you know what else? It means also all the laughs, the games, the hugs, the slobbery kisses, and all the silliness that also comes with the job. Fatherhood is just as amazing as motherhood, and it’s freaking time it started getting all the recognition it deserves.
So happy father’s day to my first #1 guy, with whom I’m now raising my second #1 guy.
